Her Husband Is Right There. So Why Does She Feel So Invisible?

A marriage can go quiet without a fight. The phone is always close. She misses being looked at, reached for, and noticed without asking. Here’s one pattern researchers found behind that distance, and a small change she can try without another hard talk.

By Emeralda Anderson · 7 minute read

In January, Dear Annie shared a letter from a 52-year-old wife who had been married for 24 years. Her husband was still there, but she described him as “not unkind, but distant.”

“Most nights he falls asleep on the couch with the TV on and his phone in his hand. I go upstairs alone and scroll through old photos of us when we seemed like a team. What hurts is how invisible I feel. I’ll get dressed up, light a candle, even make his favorite meal, and he’ll barely look up.”

She doesn’t need a grand speech. She misses that look that says, I still see you. After enough quiet nights, she starts to blame herself.

She still loves him. She just doesn’t feel seen.

Dear Annie has printed letters from other wives married more than 20 years. Different homes, different evenings, but the same lonely feeling.

“But inside the walls of our home, I feel painfully alone.”

36%

In an AARP survey of 2,506 Americans over 40, published in 2023, more than a third of women (36 percent) said they weren’t having sex as often as they’d like. Wanting closeness does not make someone demanding. It makes her human.

It’s often the little things she misses most. Him looking up when she walks in. A hand reaching for hers. A question that shows he’s paying attention, without her having to ask for it.

When those moments grow rare, even a woman who knows her worth may wonder if she changed. It must be me. My weight. My age. The changes nobody warned me about.

But his distance is not proof that her body is the reason. Researchers have studied a pattern that helps explain why the harder someone tries to get close, the harder it can become.

Everything she tries is an ask

Women who feel this way have often tried everything they know. One Dear Annie reader spent a whole weekend repainting their bedroom, hoping he would finally notice.

“He walked in, set down his keys and asked what was for dinner.”

Another tried something more intimate.

“even if I wear a sexy nighty the response I will get would be ‘are you trying to seduce me?’”

His favorite dinner. The new dress. A date night. A hard conversation. Even reaching for him in bed. Each one comes from love, but each one gives him another chance to say no, or to say nothing at all.

After a while, not asking can feel safer than risking one more quiet no. One wife put that choice into words:

“In order for me to avoid rejection, I have decided not to ask or make advances. I just wait for his move and I will respond.”

What researchers found

It was never her body

Couples researchers call it the demand-withdraw pattern. One partner reaches for closeness or change. The other pulls back. The harder one tries, the more the other may retreat.

Paul Schrodt, a communication professor at Texas Christian University, led an analysis of 74 studies on it. In his words:

“It’s the most common pattern of conflict in marriage or any committed, established romantic relationship.”

It also feeds itself. Studies that follow couples closely find that when one partner pushes harder, the other tends to pull back further. A therapist writing for the Gottman Institute warns that being in “pursuit mode” “may cause their distant partner to withdraw even more.”

Reaching for the man she loves wasn’t wrong. But when every reach needs an answer, the distance can turn into a cycle neither knows how to break.

That pattern says nothing about whether her body is worthy of love. And it leaves room for a different kind of first step.

What happens when she stops asking

Psychologist Harriet Lerner, author of The Dance of Anger, has written about this pattern for decades. She says the partner who pulls away tends to open up “most freely when they aren’t being pushed, pursued, or criticized,” and that the one who reaches “is often best served by discovering ways to call off the pursuit.”

One wife found that stepping out of the chase changed the way they met each other.

“I did give up ... initiating, stressing, fearing, and within a week, hubby pursued me.”

Another found that a softer invitation worked better than asking him outright.

“When I started saying things like, ‘I’m going to take a shower, come meet me.’ or ‘I’m going to bed and I’ll be waiting for you’, I got much better results.”

Stopping the chase doesn’t mean settling. It means making room for a new moment that doesn’t start with another request.

That’s why scent is worth a closer look.

A new invitation, without another ask

A dress needs him to look up. A hard talk needs an answer. A new fragrance goes with her into the room, without his permission or participation.

Picture an ordinary evening. She leans across him for the remote. She’s wearing a new scent. Maybe he asks, “What are you wearing?” When so little attention comes unasked, that small opening means something.

Smell has a close link to emotion and memory. Research shows that odors can bring back personal memories with unusual force. A perfume isn’t a relationship fix, but scent plays a real part in familiar moments.

Our noses get used to familiar smells. Odor scientist Pamela Dalton has studied the effect. A person coming close may still notice a fragrance its wearer no longer detects.

One wife wrote about using her own perfume to create just such a moment. This was her fragrance, not Lumessa:

“whenever I want my husband to make a move I just spray a dab and get close. It never fails, he always melts all over me”

A wife commenting on Date Your Spouse, about her own perfume

That wife’s story is hers alone, not a Lumessa result. But it captures the appeal: a fragrance can invite a new moment without requiring another plea.

Meet Lumessa For Her (Pheromone-Infused Perfume)

Lumessa For Her (Pheromone-Infused Perfume) was made for that kind of moment. No special occasion. No new speech. Just a warm, personal scent to wear when they’re already close.

Lumessa For Her is a 15 ml oil-based Floral Amber pheromone perfume. It opens with jasmine and blackcurrant bud, moves into peony and rose, then settles into warm, creamy amber, with a blend of copulins and androsterone (pheromones) underneath. It’s a grown-up fragrance with a softer, close-to-skin style, made to “enhance, not overpower.”

So what do pheromones do? They’re natural scent signals the body gives off, usually too faint to notice as a smell. Copulins are part of a woman’s own natural scent, and in small studies men exposed to them showed a rise in testosterone. Androsterone adds a soft, musky, skin-like warmth. He’ll notice the jasmine and blackcurrant; the pheromones sit quietly underneath, right where he gets close.

Two to three drops on wrists, neck, behind the ears, or inner elbows. Wear it alone or under a favorite perfume. Something new for an ordinary evening, without a speech or a plan.

Why this is worth trying tonight

1. Something genuinely new. When evenings blur together, a fragrance he hasn’t smelled on her before adds a new detail to their usual routine. She doesn’t need him to plan it.

2. Worn close, where moments happen. The oil is dabbed onto skin, on wrists or near the neck. Sitting together or passing in the kitchen gives someone nearby a chance to notice.

3. No pressure to perform. No need to ask, “Do you still find me attractive?” She gets a small change she can make herself. A simple “What are you wearing?” could be the start of a different kind of talk.

A scent made for being close

Jasmine and blackcurrant bud open the scent. Peony and rose soften it. Creamy amber gives it warmth. Underneath, a pheromone blend sits close to the skin. Not candy-sweet. Not made to fill the room. A floral, grown-up perfume for up-close moments.

How to wear it

01

Before dinner or an evening together, apply 2 to 3 drops to the wrists, behind the ears, neck, or inner elbows. Gently rub in as directed.

02

Wear it alone for a new signature scent, or layer it under the perfume she already loves.

03

Don’t keep adding more when the smell seems to fade. Her nose may be getting used to it, while a person who comes close may still notice it.

04

Make dinner. Sit close. Reach for the remote. No need to ask what he thinks. If he notices, she can let the conversation start with him.

Questions women ask us

Will he know I’m trying to get his attention?

She can just wear it as part of her usual routine. If someone asks about the scent, it’s a natural conversation, not a request for approval.

Is it sweet or overpowering?

Lumessa’s Floral Amber profile combines jasmine, blackcurrant bud, peony, rose, and warm amber. It’s described as grown-up rather than sugary, and the usual amount is just 2 to 3 drops. Fragrance is personal, so individual preferences vary.

If I stop smelling it, has it faded?

Not necessarily. The nose can get used to a scent worn for a while. A person who is new to that fragrance may still smell it, so there is no need to keep adding more just to notice it yourself.

What is the pheromone blend?

Lumessa contains copulins and androsterone, often marketed as a pheromone blend. They’re ingredients, not a promise about anyone’s desire. The reasons to try it are easy to experience: warm Floral Amber, an oil worn close, and a simple two-to-three-drop ritual.

Will I be signed up for repeat deliveries?

Check the choice selected on the product page carefully. Recurring deliveries every 1 or 2 months may be preselected. For a single order, select the one-time purchase option before checkout. The order page shows the billing and cancellation details.

What if he doesn’t say anything?

Nobody can promise his reaction. Lumessa simply gives her a new scent to bring into familiar evenings, without another uncomfortable ask. She gets to enjoy wearing it whether he comments or not.

What should I know about returns?

The current published policy allows requests for eligible unused, unopened items within 30 days of delivery. Opened products and some promotional purchases are excluded, and approval is required. Read the Refund Policy before ordering, especially for bundles.

When will it arrive?

Processing is generally listed as 1 to 3 business days. Delivery times and charges can vary, so check the shipping estimate and terms at checkout.
